**The current wait time between your first meeting at CAPS (the Initial Consultation) and when your assigned counselor contacts you to arrange your intake counseling session is averaging 6 days with a maximum wait of about 2 weeks (as of June 6, 2023).

Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS) provides free and confidential mental health assessment, counseling, case management, and referrals to currently-registered Wayne State students, along with consultation and outreach to the Wayne State University community. CAPS promotes a culture of understanding and growth through professional collaboration among our dynamic staff of licensed professional counselors, psychologists, and social workers. CAPS is fully accredited by the International Association of Counseling Services.

CAPS Condemns Racial Violence

WSU CAPS mourns and condemns the senseless deaths of George Floyd, Ahmaud Arbery, Breonna Taylor, Trayvon Martin, and so many other unarmed Black Americans who had their lives taken because of their race. We are truly outraged, and we decry all acts of racial violence and condemn the recent insurrection. As many have correctly identified, our country is still suffering from a deeply rooted and stoked anti-Black pandemic in addition to the COVID-19 pandemic. Please know that CAPS stands in united solidarity with Black WSU students, faculty, and staff, and with the larger community of targeted individuals. Black Lives Matter!

Being a victim of racism is traumatic and takes a serious mental and physical toll. This impact can be vicarious when people are exposed to media coverage of our disgraceful American reality. Living in constant fear is demoralizing and obviously harmful. Black Americans are exhausted. CAPS gets that you are sick and tired of being sick and tired. We are here to do our very best to help. Our counselors are talented, skilled and they truly care. Many have specialized in the treatment of trauma. Many are people of color or of other identities that are targeted in this country. CAPS has a Diversity Committee and a Social Justice Working Group that try hard to make very sure that we are always learning and are never complacent about these issues. Please do not hesitate to reach out for help, and encourage other WSU students you care about to do the same.
