Suicide Prevention

If your student is in immediate danger of harming themselves:

  • Do not leave him or her alone.
  • Take his or her words seriously and respond with compassion.
  • If your student has a suicide plan, seek immediate help from one of the following:

    • The nearest hospital with an emergency room

  • Go with them if you are able, or help them find another trusted family member or friend to accompany them, to be sure they get to one of these places safely.

If they are not willing to take these steps, you can call the Wayne State Police or 911.
 

If your student needs help, but there is no immediate threat of harm:

  • Help your student remove access to any tools for suicide, such as firearms and medications.

  • Have your student call WSU Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS) at (313) 577-3398 or the Afterhours Program at (313) 577-CAPS (2277) for a confidential consultation with a counselor. If they do not want to, you can call for a consultation for yourself to strategize how best to help.

  • Go to the Wayne State Suicide Prevention website: https://suicideprevention.wayne.edu/

  • Call the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline at (800) 273-TALK (8255). They are available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week and you can ask confidential questions about your friend and how to get them help.
